No, not that Grammy…
…This Grammy
I had just become a doula when my first grandchild was born. I was abreast on all of the latest information and guidelines from WHO, AAP, CDC. I was trained in infant sleep and breastfeeding and I was anxious to share EVERYTHING I had newly learned with my daughter-in-law. (Thank goodness I had the sense NOT TO!)
But don’t worry, this blog is not going to be ALL about me.
Although if you ask my firstborn grandangel, she will assuredly tell you “my Grammy is the best Grammy in the whole wide world.”
This is about you.
If you have recently, or will soon, become a grandparent, you are likely feeling over the moon! And I can tell you with authority you have every reason to be!
This is truly the greatest role you will ever play.
There is a new level of love that opens up that you never knew existed (and trust me, I have led my whole life with my heart).
And it’s not just the love that you feel for that sweet new human who will call you Grammy, Nana, Memaw, Grandma, Abuela, or something cool like GiGi or Bella.
It is so much more.
More love for your child as they become a parent, more love for your partner, more love for your lawn person and the waiter at your favorite eatery…
…and it goes on and on.
It is a love that you will feel in every cell of your body and changes you forever.
Parenting in the New Millennium
We raised some pretty amazing humans!
They are smart, strong, compassionate, determined.
We raised them to be free thinkers, and problem solvers.
We nurtured them to be independent and trust that they could do anything they chose to do.
We praised them so they would feel they were the best at anything they set out to endeavor.
And when they didn’t know something…
…they had the internet!
And believe me, everything they will ever need to know about parenting is there.
And they know how to find it.
They have thousands upon thousands of resources on practices and protocols for newborn care and safety.
They have support groups filled with millions of people who are just like them. Groups for feeding, sleep, discipline… you name it.
They don’t have to pick up the phone and call home to find out if baby acne is normal.
Google, FaceBook, YouTube, Instagram, have all the answers they need.
Grand-Parenting in the New Millennium
Is it any surprise they don’t think they need us the way we needed our families as support and information when we were raising them?!
Add to that, so much has changed since they were our babies.
Even with knowing all the latest guidelines because of my doula training, the urge to suggest *just let her sleep on her stomach* was so hard to resist when I saw my sweet angel baby struggling to sleep as a newborn.
After all, that’s what we did with them, and look how great they turned out.
But, did you know that safe sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics state that on their back, with no blankets, pillows or stuffed animals on a firm crib mattress with a snugly fitted sheet is the safe way for a baby to sleep?
- What about protocols for car seat safety?
- Positional Asphyxiation?
- Feeding schedules?
- Breastmilk/formula safe handling?
- The 4th Trimester?
- BabyWise/Moms on Call?
- The 5 S’s?
And what the heck is a SNOO?!!
You have no reason to know these new things!
Until Now
Your Baby
is having
A Baby!
You are going to be the next
Grammy of the year.
We are going to help!
Because at Orlando Doulas, we care
about Grandparents.
So much so, we offer a class that will take your grand-parenting skills to the next level!
Learn about parenting styles that are relevant to families today.
Learn why your daughter is insisting you get a Tdap shot before you visit your new grand baby.
Learn why your daughter-in-law told your son to tell you to please not to kiss the baby!
(I know, I still raise my eyebrows and scoff a bit at some of the things.)
But every generation knows more than the one before.
And remember we raised some pretty remarkable humans!
They are determined to be better parents than we were, just the same way we were determined to do a better job than ours.
It’s like the lyric from the song
The Living Years, by Mike and the Mechanics
“Every generation blames the one before.”
But our generation can make a change.
We live in an age where information is abundant. And sharing that information is easy.
We are open to learning today’s best practices for newborn care.
We are open to learning all the safety guidelines for sleep and feeding and travel.
We are open to learning everything we need, to be the resource they need.
Not only equipped with all the latest information they need,
but with all the love and commitment they don’t even know they need as they make the magical journey into parenthood.
And this is where
